I would agree with John that we should love others unconditionally and engage in their lives. I think there is a natural tendency for people to rank sins and the severity of sin as we see in our legal system. People forget that God sees sin as sin and that Jesus himself was criticized for hanging out with the worst of sinners in his day.
I think may Christians confuse politics with people. I have heard one Christian say that he does love those who are gay but when they try to make their lifestyle a political agenda that everyone should just accept as normal he opposes it, just as he would oppose an adulterer doing the same thing. I don't know how easy it is to hold that balance but I think we need to love someone where they are at not where we they can get to if we change them.
That is why the love the sinner hate the sin slogan is tired and worn out for so many. You have to actually love someone for that statement to be valid at all. No love is displayed so all that is seen is hate. I don't know what it will take for us to move beyond this.
