Keep an eye on urlLink this issue . The U.S. has a bad history of intervention in Latin America when they decide to go out on their own. In fact, I can't think of a single Latin American country where we haven't intervened at some point. Brazil maybe. Someone urlLink e-mail me and tell me if they know of another Latin American country we've left alone. urlLink This sucks.
Does anyone know what recourse we have on this one? Who can we talk to about this? Who the hell does urlLink Bush think he is? Ask yourself this: Why would we oppose the International Criminal Court? The immunity issue is complete bullshit. The only reason we want immunity is so that we can continue being cowboys all around the world without any recourse.
We have a track record of human rights abuses. What we're afraid of is being held accountable. It's egregious, petty and despicable. Do me a favor. Write, e-mail and call your urlLink senators . Tell them to urge urlLink Bush to be reasonable.
Especially if you don't live in Minnesota. I'm not sure how urlLink Dayton feels about it, but I'm pretty sure urlLink Wellstone is sane on this issue. Do the same with your other urlLink representatives . I just did. I'll even help you out. You can use my letter.
Just copy and paste below. Feel free to edit it as you see fit: Dear [senator or representative from your state] I'm taking the time to write to you today about something that I feel is of great importance. It's the U.S.'s opposition to the International Criminal Court. I don't feel the issue of immunity for U.S. peacekeepers is a valid one. In fact I think it undermines the entire notion of an international court. I hope you'll urge President Bush to rethink his position.
Sincerely, [etc., etc. ] I once took a class with someone who was an aide in the House of Representatives here in Minnesota. He said that in the office he worked in, if they recieved three or more letters on an issue, they at least looked into it. Three . I don't know if the number is that low in Washington, but by God, someone has to start speaking up about this shit. Maybe someday I'll be able to scrawl "This machine kills fascists" on my computer.
