The Gig My sister came down, alone, for the show. My niece was too busy getting her hair done to come down. My sister, my Mom and I ate Chik-Fil-A "sammiches" for dinner and then we headed over to the club. The first band was just finishing up when I arrived, so I had to start loading up almost as soon as I got there. My guys had been there for awhile. We only had about 20 people there to see us this time out, although we managed to keep a good portion of the first band's people there until the end of our first set. My friend Rob was supposed to have been there tonight but he backed out again. This time he said his wife was ill, last time it was him that was ill. Here was our first set: "Opportunity Knocks", "Stuck In The Middle", "Promise You The Moon", "Love The One You're With", "The Authority Song", "You Can't Run", "Had A Girl", "Wild Night", "Safe In My Arms", "There For Me", "Steal My Kisses", "The Breakup Song", and "The House Is A-Rockin". Everything turned out pretty well, except a few notes here and there (no major disasters like last time). During the break I went and sat with my Mom, my sister, and a few friends from my Mom's work. I had Mom tape the show for me tonight. For me and for Al, who has a friend over in Iraq that wanted to hear what Al's band sounded like.
I'll make a copy this week for Al to send to the guy. Here was our second set: "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding", "Sleeping Forever", "Badge", "Better", "Yesterday's Girl" (I didn't fare too well on this one, neither did JP on vocals), "Cold Shot", "I Got Loaded" (probably the best we've ever sounded this one), "Come On Let's Go", "Feelin' Alright", and "Fell In Love With A Girl". Other than "Yesterday's Girl" being a bit sloppy, we did pretty well on this set too, no major disasters yet again.
We cut the second set short by three songs because the manager told us he needed us off by 11:15pm, rather than 11:30pm as we were told. That manager... The last time we played there he tried screwing us on the money but he eventually made good. Tonight, he split before we were offstage and then the owner wanted to make a new deal with us, less money for us, of course, disregarding our agreement with the manager who booked us.
After some discussion, he finally made good too, but man, how uncool and unprofessional. JP had even given the manager a chance to negate our agreement last week, after he found out that we wouldn't have very many people there, but the guy said "no, that's alright". I don't think we're going to play there again. I know I said it before, but this time I think it's definite. I stayed late there with JP, until about 1:15am. I watched the band that followed us for a bit (Spot Lucy, good band) and drank a Heineken. I forgot that JP and his wife bought us each a shot during our first set (Lemon Drops? ), and man, was it strong! JP also brought some cokes with rum in them for him and I, which I worked on during the first set. I was feelin' alright tonight. I'm listening to the tape of the show tonight and it sounds pretty good, quality-wise and performance-wise.
Cool. I'll be heading to bed shortly. I guess I need to start becoming an early riser again. Costco is open tomorrow, so I think I'm going to go and apply there before I totally commit to Arbys. Truthfully, I'm not looking forward to working at Arbys at all .
