Today, after school, i caught the bus to the forest hill station and onward from there. Waiting at the bus stop i saw a school friend.
Now, for me, if i see a person i know in an unfamiliar situation, more often then not, they will become my closest friend for however long this unfamiliar should help itself to last. We began talking. Telling jokes, talking about other peoples jokes, referencing to previous jokes of our own. This went on for sometime before i realised that, there was in fact an art to subway conversations. First off, you gotta tell jokes. It's requirement. It keeps the other person interested and creats an immediate and obvious response.
Secondly, you have to make the joke last as long as possible and yet be able to be broken off at any moment without any loss to your friendship or conversation in the whole. Basically make it frivilous and meaningfull at the same time. There has got to be a song about this somewhere. It's such a cultural archetype (is that an oxymoron?). I mean everyone does it. Never with their good friends. Good friends it's inside jokes and plans for later moments in time. Thirdly: at the moment it escapes me but i'll be sure to think about it.
