For those of you not in the know, a large portion of the United States is currently being overtaken by the Brood X cicada clan. Brood X, otherwise known as the 17-year clan (or, as my grandfather likes to call them, those rat-bastard-sons-of-bitches), gestates underground for 17 years, feeding on sap and tree roots. After 17 years, these suckers bore their way to the surface, leaving nice little holes in your lawn - sort of a natural aerator. After getting to the surface, they climb the nearest tree or plant, do a little molting, then do the nasty, lay some eggs and die. It's quite amazing to me how much urlLink internet media attention this phenomenon has received.
I don't remember hearing this much about it last time it happened. Granted, I was only 9 years old, and the internet hadn't made it to the general public yet. Still, these suckers are nasty! Why the fascination? Maybe it's their beady red eyes. In any event, I wanted to share with you an amusing site called urlLink Cicadaville that my uncle forwarded to other members of the family. Enjoy! And keep your children indoors! !
