Movie Review - Kill Bill Vol. 1 well. its been some time since my last review n erm. stop pressuring me! im aredi writing one now,
aint i? anyway, was really a weird day at lido. saw wong lilin n allan wu, some smalltime channel 8 actor wif his gf, my fren's fren,
n my fren. e theatre sure was crowded wif familiar ppl on a thurs afternoon. Synopsis: erm. a simple plot runs thruout e film ie kill bill. im sure u muz have read in e papers (
u cant miss those posters of her wif a samurai sword) abt uma thurman ( aka black mamba aka * beep* being " killed"
by her fellow assasins ( e deadly vipers assasination squad) except she din really die n after coming out of a coma 4 yrs later, goes on a rampage to exact revenge. in this 1st vol, she kills lucy liu (
aka cotton mouth aka O'Ren Ishiii) n vivica fox ( aka Copperhead aka vernita green) n errr. yah, dats all there is to e story Gripes:
ok, i noe e critics went gaga over e movie n lotsof ppl have said they liked it ( most of them gals) but i gotta say a movie richly laced wif pulp culture but supported by a thin ( dats really an understatement. im tinking more of zero)
plot development doesnt go down well for me. there wasnt much space for e cast to perform anyway, since its mainly an action movie, so i cant comment on any convincing or moving portrayals. fight scenes got boring after awhile cos of repetitive n overuse of e same methods of decapitation, mutilation n showerhead bloodspurts (
yes, i really do mean showerhead) e gore n violence promised by reviews neva materialised since it was more comical n funny than visually shocking ( in part due to tarantino's obsession wif pulp culture in e film) if this movie is gory, then saving private ryan muz have been totally gut-
wrenching. n thanx to e non- existent plot, everything was totally predictable ie uma thurman won every fight, lost e least blood n killed hundreds of henchmen, juz like ur typical comic bk superhero (
another influence of pulp culture) how many times have i mentioned e P n C words aredi? e movie also sorely lacked originality, since those showerhead bloodspurts were imitations of early period american horror n hk martial art flicks. uma thurman was dressed like bruce lee n u even had a jap bodyguard in highsch uniform n gothic makeup. it juz reeks of tarantino playing out his own fantasies abt pulp culture in e movie.
martial art choreography is so- so n nothing new, given dat e choreographer is yuen ho ping, n we muz have seen too much of his werks since crouching tiger. sheesh. i muz really hate this movie.
hahaa Compliments: well. thanx to pulp culture ( again) we got 3 nice things to admire in e film. 1,
e funky disco- ish soundtrack ( which i have tried to d/ l) 2, some nice editing of frames n scenes.
3, a short seqeunce of japanese- styled animation which was surprising n truly entertaining. All in all ok, besides those 3 things i mentioned under compliments, there really isnt much to look forward to in e film,
unless u ar a fan of retro pulp culture ( darn i said it again) n judging by wat my female frens have said abt it, gals seem to have an affinity for this sortof thing. i tink i mentioned b4 dat im a sucker for gd plot developments, which i tink shld be e core of any movie (
its a provocative n novel storyline dat wld make a movie stick in ur mind for life, not some funky music or retro colors) n since KillBill is apparently lacking in it, i have to say i shall d/ l vol 2. i paid 6.
50 n felt dat tarantino ( aka overhyped 1 hit wonder in Pulp Fiction) owes me a refund.
