Movie Review - Goodbye Lenin! my 1st movie since lotr! lots of germans were in e theatre wif me, which made me wunder if im e foreigner watching a german film in s'pore... hmm... Synopsis: Alex's mum went into a coma on e eve of e fall of e berlin wall, n awakes 8 mnths later after massive social devts have occurred in which germany becomes a united capitalist nation. As she was a staunch commie, Alex tries to con his mum into tinking dat they ar still living in e old communist German Democratic Republic, for fear dat his mum might suffer another heart attack... Compliments: a dark comedy portraying e contrasting lives b/w east n west germany of e times, e film succeeds in satirising e whole event, despite potentially profound political/emotional undercurrents.
From e typical west german who takes everything in life for granted, to e plight of Alex's family as they struggle to adapt to a new capitalist system, e whole movie is a montage of multi-faceted views of east germany in dat era. Performances by a strong cast add further credibilty to e story, n it shld be enjoyed by historians n e layman alike.
Gripes: too bad i cant understand german, cos there were parts when e german audience was laffing n i cldnt get e joke from e subtitles... grrr..... n i guess e cinematography n editing cld have been done more creatively... nothing new there plus e soundtrack is quite stale n i cldnt remember any tune from it at all. All in all: its entertaining n mildly provocative, n shld be well worth 8.50.... tho im extra happy dat i paid 6.50 for it!
