Movie Review (Part Deux) - Love Me If You Dare (LMIYD) Staying true to my word of getting my reviews out before LOTR, the last movie I watched before KHNH was Love Me If You Dare aka urlLink Jeux D'enfants . As many would have urlLink read , this movie is billed as the "next" urlLink Amelie . Well, it's more like a darker, more perversed version of Amelie.
This movie stars urlLink Marion Cotillard (the girl in "Taxi", I'm guessin' she was Daniel's girfriend and not Petra) as Sophie and urlLink Guillaume Canet (the guy from "The Beach", I'm guessin' that French girl's boyfriend, but I seriously wouldn't know) as Julien. Best friends since young, the two have been inseparable and constantly play a game of dare. When still in the stages of childhood, daring each other to "pee in the principal's office" or "wreck a sister's wedding" is awfully funny. When in teenage-hood, the dares don't seem as funny and borders on being mean. BUT when in adulthood, it is just SICK. Somehow, they do fall in love but they have been playing their game for so long that they never confess their feelings (without kidding around) till the very end. The movie was definitely good. The use of bright colours and various fantasy-like sequences remind viewers of Amelie.
But that is where the similarity ends. While Amelie focuses on good deeds and has an overall feel-good aura, LMIYD is disturbing. The love between the two leads is deep despite their attempts to bury it. The two friends also think of ways to hurt the other, by a) humiliation b) ruining a wedding and c) faking a terrible a car accident. And yet, one seems to hope that they will end up together, if not for love, but to put an end to all those "childish" games, hence the title jeux d'enfants.
They do end up together, but not in the way you would think. Disturbing. It was enjoyable but definitely disturbing, set to the tune of "La Vie En Rose". Kudos to the two young stars who played Sophie and Julien as kids. I would definitely pay $8.50 to watch it. Cap? Pas Cap?
