MOVIE REVIEW - DOWN WITH LOVE Ladies and gentlemen, let me get this off my chest right now, "EWAN MCGREGOR IS HOT !!!! " There, I've said it. Now I can begin my review. Plot A gem of a movie starring Ewan McGregor, Renee Zellweger, David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Paulson.
Set in the 60s in New York City, Down With Love casts Renee as Barbara Novak, a writer who opines that women can have sex a la carte just like men and Ewan as Catcher Block, a writer for a man's magazine and also known as a ladies' man, a man's man and man about town. Sarah and David are Barbara's and Catcher's respective bosses. The movie shows the budding romance between the two leads while they are pretending to be people they are not. At the same time, Catcher's boss, Peter (Hyde Pierce) is attempting to have his own romance with Renee's editor, Vicky (Paulson). After being publicly snubbed by Barbara because he failed to turn up for any of his interviews with her (he was supposed to do a cover story on Barbara for the magazine), he vows to get the expose on Barbara. His "beautifully" crafted plan to get her to fall in love with the persona he created, Zip Martin, a Texan astronaut, unravels like a torn rug when the tables were turned on him.
He fell in love with her instead. Characters urlLink Renee was adorable as the feminist advice writer, Barbara. With her endless supply of fabulous clothes, she looked great in every scene she was in. Her perky attitude was just right and not too saccharine for my taste. She pulled her role off with aplomb, great clothes aside. urlLink Ewan was HOT! As Catcher Block, he had the right combination of playboy charm and new-age sensitivity. He was also able to maintain a credible Texan accent throughout the show. He proves again that he is a versatile actor, and comedy can be added to his list growing of talents. To think that this is the same guy who acted in urlLink Trainspotting as a heroin addict. Personally, I thought urlLink David Hyde Pierce stole the show.
Comedy is certainly his forte. With his deadpan face, he spouted his one-liners perfectly. He was able to get the audience rolling around laughing with just a look, without having to resort to slap-stick comedy (unlike some comedians I know). His neurotic character certainly brought to mind his other character, Niles from Fraisier. urlLink Sarah Paulson was also suited for her role. As Barbara's editor, she shared runway space with her. Comments In one word, the movie was CUTE.
It was light and frothy like a pina colada on a hot day. Another plus point was the fantastic dialogue. The witty repartee between Ewan and Renee as well as with David was fabulous. Double entendres abound and it culminated in a split-screen visual that was absolutely hilarious. One thing I liked about the show was that it didn't pretend to be a serious, thought-provoking movie. With the retro backdrop - bright colours, an almost comic-like Manhattan scenery, and tons of retro-chic clothes, the movie was anything BUT heavy.
Issues on feminism and male-chauvinism were dealt with so lightly that it was like powdered sugar on a cinnamon roll. Overall I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Worth paying $8.50 for it. Of course the biggest draw was Ewan and David. Ewas was HOT!
