O Canada, That Liberal Bastion So the liberals are fleeing this "increasingly conservative" United States of America. So says an Associated Press story. It ran in The Times , but didnt get posted to the site, so as usual, heres the story on urlLink CNN . Funny, the conservatives think this country is getting a bit too liberal. But the liberal types are fleeing and Im not in tow.
Going to the land of milk and honey, while nice, would leave me with far less to gripe about. Without that, Id have no reason to live. I prefer to point out the stupidities and circular logic all while remaining faceless and almost placeless and being the passive activist. Ive actually never been drawn to Canada. Ive always had my eyes set on south of the border - Mexico or somewhere in the Caribbean. Im cold-blooded, so I need to the sun. Ive also go this penchant for spicier foods, not French cuisine or buffalo. Yes, the more liberal gun control laws and the decriminalization of marijuana means safer streets and more laid back mornings, afternoons, evenings and nights, but why just give up here.
Sorry for the delayed warning, but idyllic banter follows. The story notes that people feel Canada better represents the ideals of the United States - set in parchment and blood so long ago - but thats all the more reason to stay and vote. According to the urlLink Federal Election Commission about 51% of voting-age U.S. citizens actually did the deed in the 2000 elections. Pretty depressing number, dont you think? That number improves to a whopping 67% of registered voters actually doing the deed in the 2000 elections. Is it not possible for more people to take part? Hell, 1/3 of the registered U.S. citizenry didnt vote. Couldnt that have made a difference? Its not really asking much, just for people to smarten up.
I think its happening now; better late than never. Approval for George W. Bush continues to fall, as some people realize they were just caught up in the borderline urlLink fascist frenzy following Sept. 11, 2001. Others are just tired of the war they once supported. Maybe they arent doves, but maybe they are espousing the dovish cry: Support Our Troop, Bring Them Home. See, things just take time. Im sure the United States could include some liberalism and corrections to itself, but that would require the Green, Reform and what ever other parties there are, to get some people into office.
In most every other democratic society, many parties make up the government, but not here. Were stuck with 2 choices, and, as has been the case, the lines blur between them a little too often. Rather than flee the country in pursuit of good weed and gay marriage, stay here, curse the president and get active. Oh, and smoke a bowl in your backyard. Decriminalizing weed can take away some of the fun to it.
