Conspiracy Theory Collision So the last post was debunking one, now Im supporting one. On Sept. 2, it was reported that a major asteroid was on a collision course with Earth. It would hit on March 21, 2014 and lead to chaos and death, according U.S. stories. The BBC was a bit tamer. The next day, it was reported that sorry, we were wrong and overzealous because the odds were a long shot and getting less likely each day. The story has become a yearly event since 1998, but to what purpose, when each time the actual doomsday scenario is immediately blown off? why not notice it, study it for a few days, recalculate and skip the trouble? They latest collision would have been 11 years away, giving them ample time to correct themselves before going public. But the current method has a crying wolf effect. People react to the doomsday story, but then are reassured. A few more of these and fewer and fewer people will notice each time the story is reported, until finally the story is reported, but there isnt a follow-up stating the collision wont happen.
Does this sound a little crazy? Yes. Did the BBC ask this question several days after the last doomsday revelation? urlLink Yes. Do I think an asteroid is heading straight for Earth in the near future? No. But if it were, if March 21, 2014 was going to be doomsday, how would the world react if people were told about it? Would people stop paying their bills, stop worrying about getting ahead? I think so. I know Id stop paying my bills.
At least my student loans. Id need to keep a line of credit open for my 11 years of partying. Maybe if the story would break, a contingency plan would be offered up, as a way to save the human race. By this time, there might be a much more substantial space station. There might be a moon base, but nothing that would support a large portion of the worlds population.
Surely some would stay and accept their fate. Armageddon is built into all the major religions, but not everyone who wanted a chance to get off could or would. The effects of a real threat of collision could certainly lead to serious complications for governments around the globe. Of course, the U.S. could pull an Armageddon style trick out of its sleeve, if only they hadnt starved NASA for as long as they did. ** Well theres a refreshing over breakfast and before work read.
