Spin the Wheel to Pick a Reason for War ***WARNING: The following posts are as equally American as the statements made by those flying American flags, those putting "Support Our Troops" bumper stickers on their cars, those saying shut up to war protesters. *** Is it possible for me to go on about this war anymore? Yes. Why? Because support for the war grows for any number of wrong reasons. Is it because U.S. soldiers have died and been taken captive? That's war. These people knew what the possibilities were. It was the United States who invaded another country. Is it because in the beginning the quick and decisive win seemed imminent? Way to jump on the bandwagon. Is it because people are buying the propaganda that we shouldn't diss the president while at war? The First Amendment gives free speech unconditionally at all times. What follows is the most recent list of reasons for going to war.
As a reminder the U.N. resolution that George W. Bush is using to legitimize the war is over weapons of mass destruction: 1. ) Weapons of mass destruction. U.S. forces have secured a site which has been called a possible chemical agent factory. Verdict is still out on whether it is or was. 2. ) Freeing the Iraqi people. As I have said before, the only way the Iraqi people will truly be free is for them to rise up against Saddam Hussein on their own or even with U.S. backing, but not U.S.-led war. It should be noted that a Washington Post analysis piece takes note of the violence following the U.S. juggernaut moving toward Baghdad. As forces root out Saddam's control along its path, citizens are left in a lawless world of fighting, looting and murder. This was apparently part of the design to the invasion force. Keep on plowing ahead, don't look back. What does all of this mean? With Operation Iraqi Freedom, the freedom, civility and liberties, which the United States would like to put into place, come second to violence. With U.S. forces so lean and single-minded, they miss the opportunity to include the Iraqi people in tearing down the old regime and building up a new government.
The U.S. is missing the chance to root out the suspected weapons of mass destruction that would justify the war to me and the 80% of the world population who doesn't support this strike. It was this very tactic that lead to the U.S. deaths and POWs. Very few of those came from the front lines, but rather from behind, where U.S.-led forces had less than needed to maintain control and lookout.
3. ) Overthrowing a dictator. He's been a dictator for decades, so why now when he has been at his most peaceable? 4. ) Oil. Stories abound on this one, but as recently as Sunday during a church sermon, a Princeton, N.J.,-area pastor was concerned that this was the reason behind the war. Pastors aren't generally the conspiracy theorists. To go along with this: A Reuters story detailing urlLink windfall for Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, Halliburton.
5. ) Water. This came through from someone at the AIA Bookstore who has read at least two stories/blogs/theories stating the mighty Tigris and Euphrates rivers are behind U.S. control of the largely arid Arabian Peninsula. 6. ) Revenge. Saddam wanted to kill his daddy, so little Bush takes the chance to settle a family thorn. Having trouble picking a reason for this war?
