As recently as three hours ago I was not into movies; it had gotten to the point where it was a struggle to just sit through them without my wind wandering off on some tangent. I'm not sure why this was, as I have been into them very much in the past. I guess I got caught up in other things such as the excitement of filming of our new video, the dullness of going to school, and the thrill hanging out with Jesseca. Whatever the reason was, I just seemed to have lost interest in them. That all changed today after I watched Chasing Amy . I don't know how I went so long without seeing this movie.
Especially since I have been a Kevin Smith fan for at least 6 years now. In any case, this movie has breathed a breath of fresh air into me. I have once again figured out why I love the movies. That being said, I have three little reviews for the movies that I rented from Tony's on Wednesday (yes, they are overdue). I will go in order from worst to best because I figured I would do as that lady says in that one song and "save the best for last. " Here we go.
C.H.U.D. - Oh my god, what a steaming pile of dog doodoo this is. If you take the worst idea you can think of, put it into movie form, and inject it with the downright ugliest actors you have ever seen, all the cheesiness you can muster, the worst filming locations in the world, and horrible directing, you get this horrifying disaster of a movie. This is very likely the most unwatchable and least entertaining movie ever made. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that a movie could be this bad. Steel Magnolias - I didn't really watch this movie because being in the presence of Jesseca fills me with joy and makes me unable to pay attention to such things as TV sets, but I did look at the screen for a lot of it and I even followed some of the story.
What I took from it was this: There are some movies made solely for the female audience, and this is one of them. I think I would like this movie and think it was great, funny and sad... if I was a girl. But alas, I am not. So I may sound sexist or whatnot by saying this (and I assure you that i'm not), but this is a chick-flick in its purest form. Not that there is anything wrong with that. And make no mistake about the placing of this film in the paragraph, this movie is a hell of a lot better than C.H.U.D.
, even to guys. Chasing Amy - I think I have already made it quite clear that I liked this movie, so that is a given. Now I will just tell you some of the reasons why. First of all I loved the directing. I'm not talking about nice cinematography, flashy special effects, or intriguing camera angles. Rather, I was impressed by the more simplistic things about the directing.
This should come as no surprise; seeing that Kevin Smith was behind it. The sheer number of jokes and the overall depth and volume of his movies overwhelmes me, and the simple fact that he accomplishes such feats in writing and film-making makes me aspire to be as good as him someday. Enough ass kissing for now though, and back to the narrower subject of Chasing Amy . There was a good story to be told, and it involved plenty of comic books, mentions of dick and fart jokes, and Jay and Silent Bob. Additionally, that pair of kooks, coupled with the ever hilarious antics of Jason Lee, provided a satisfying comedic experience that had me laughing my ass off on more than a few occasions. And perhaps best of all, Chasing Amy appealed to the mushy wussy inside of me, and if you know me well, that is a pretty big slice of the Davey Boy pie.
To sum it up, these are the kinds of movies I like, and as far as movies go, this is what's it all about.
