If you need any time off for anything, feel free to take it. " Translation: "I realize there's been nothing to do, and I don't really care if you're here or not at the moment.
" Cool. Except I don't really need the time off right now. It doesn't really matter - I could sit at home, going stir crazy, or I can sit here, and at least have a few people to socialize with. In another month or so, the circus of packing will begin, but more likely than not, it'll be at least another 6 weeks.
I got bummed yesterday. I called up the company I applied to, to find out the status of the position. In a rather uppity/curt voice, the receptionist informed me that they had 'made their final selections. ' Translation: "If you haven't heard anything yet, you're a loser and we don't want you, so don't bother me. " I thought I was wearing my very polite and sugary voice for that phone call. Guess not. I got somewhat un-bummed this morning.
Despite there being very few new job postings lately, there was one that was written like it was just for me. "Are you a recent graduate in Petroleum Engineering Technology looking for an opportunity to work for a high profile Oil & Gas company? " How did you know?? "We may have an opportunity for you. " Great!! Tell me more .

"Excellent starting wage, benefit options and a brand new career will be just a few of the perks. " So what's the catch? Sign me up! "Candidates must have a working knowledge of MS Word and Excel. " Uh oh, sounds a little like a receptionist/admin assistant position, but what the heck? Turns out it's being advertised with a staffing agency that I have a history with.
So I'm hoping my phone call gets returned soon and I can find out more. Wanna know some useless facts? For my designation of T.T. (technologist in training) in the province of Alberta, 48 people in my field filled out a salary survey in 2002: Lowest basic salary: $24,000.00 Highest basic salary: $85,000.00 Range in experience: 1 to 8 years Average yrs of experience: 2.00 Avg basic salary: $44,345.00 Avg bonus earnings: $6,801.11 Avg total income: $50,670.90 Wow, I hope by this time next year I've jumped the $8,345.00 to meet the average basic salary. "Be happy with what you have" - pshaw, then they shouldn't publish things like this.
