It occurred to me the other day that I've got to start getting over the idea that nobody wants to "be with me. " As a younger man, I was wretchedly awkward and unpopular, at least until the waning years of high school. College was fun because of the few friends I made, but as far as the opposite sex was concerned, it was a post-apocalyptic wasteland (with a few notable oases).
It's hard to say exactly when things changed, because I was in a long relationship for the two years after college, but now that I've come out here... Let's just say things have turned around, and I'm not sure exactly what to do with that. It's not that I've met hundreds (or even dozens) of fabulous women, but at some point along the way my repellent quotient dropped far enough for more than a couple people to become at least marginally interested.
I say this with as much candor and humility as possible, because I am in no way implying that I have any idea how this could have happened. Nor do I know what to do with it. But I do know that for the first time in, well, 26 years, I have... options. And options in the dating world is about as foreign to me as speaking Arabic. I'm not trying to sound like I'm some sort of swinging bachelor, because this is Real Life, and so the options I have are all conditioned upon a variety of impediments.
Some people live too far away, others are "coworkers," but the main problem is that I've yet to meet one that really makes me interested, beyond just a brief physical attraction or curiosity. Besides, this post is less about "meeting the right girl" and more about accepting this new trait. The same problems that everyone has still exist (attracted to those who aren't attracted to me, for one) but they're less demoralizing in light of my "options. " Sidenote: it may not be clear from the above, but when I say I've yet to meet one that really makes me interested, I mean meet a girl who is both a) interested in me and b) interesting. This clearly does not apply to the many interesting girls I currently have as friends, or to past girlfriends that I still talk to.
You all know who you are. Exit introspective mode. That's enough of THAT for awhile, eh? Back to the business at hand: telling you the random boring elements of my daily law school life! Sit back and enjoy...
