All this controversy about Gay Marriage in Massachusetts has gotten me thinking about the gay community. It seems to me that the gay political engines have put their emphasis into showing how homosexuality is a fact of nature, rather than a choice. I can certainly see the merit in this view if homosexuality isnt a lifestyle choice, but a fact of genetics or biochemistry, or whatever, then it certainly seems unfair to treat gays as inferior much like being Black, or Asian, or any other minority, isnt a choice, but simply a fact of who that person is. However, I think this view is terribly detrimental to homosexuals. For a number of reasons. First, it might lead to the belief that being gay is an infirmity or defect. The movie But Im a Cheerleader had a humorous take on this parents thinking that they can teach, or medicate, or in some other way solve the problem of their children being gay. Seems to me that its much better to put your efforts into saying that being gay is a decision, and its a perfectly fine decision to make.
Second, and this, I think, is a more philosophical problem I have with the biochemical vision of homosexuality. It seems dangerous to me to say that something is a biological fact of our behavior. I really have a problem with most biological determinist views of human behavior. The fact is that we dont have nearly enough knowledge of the intricacies of human behavior to make any type of intelligent ruling about what makes us act the way we are.
In an argument I had with a friend of mine who happens to be homosexual, he argued that saying homosexuality is a choice takes away from the belief that being gay is part of who you are. Not at all. I chose to be a liberal. Its definitely part of who I am. There are many facets of who we are that are choices.
